SSI Shasta Kit

The Shasta L1 kit was first prototyped by Max Manson in mid 2022 in order to make a lower cost alternative to the kits Stanford SSI used to get new members their Level 1 High Power Rocketry Certification. From there, I went and refined the design in order to improve:

  • Ease of manufacturing - Parts for the kits could be manufactured using fewer machines that required training. This allowed me to pass of the management of the program to a successor much easier.

  • Cost - multiple COTS parts were brought in-house such as plastic parts that could be 3d printed along with substituted for lower performance, but also lower cost parts, that would still fulfill the design requirements. E.g. $5 launch lugs were $.05 3d prints with a design refined over multiple generations of the kit.

  • Ease of build - The kits were more intuitive to build for new members, especially members with no experience.

  • Robust design - Reduced the number of mistakes that could be made during the build process that would be fatal to the build of the rocket. E.g. the launch lugs and motor mount installation no longer depended on the fin assembly and would thus not be affected by installing them out of order.
